I am currently running a website about home based businesses that I started a few years ago. It is a simple guide to home based businesses. It is basically an informational site and the main revenue is from ads and not from product sales.

On occasion, I will get an email from someone that wants to know how to make money on the web. Normally, it will have only a single sentence that will go something like this:

“Sir, teach me how to make money.”

In the beginning, when I do get such an email, I will take the trouble to give the sender a proper reply. Essentially, I will tell him that making money on the Internet is hard work, but very possible if he puts in the time and dedication.

I don’t think I ever got a second email. The sender was probably looking for a simple turnkey solution and I didn’t offer him one.

I did remember getting an email from somebody who said he liked my site very much. He said that he liked it so much that he wanted to join my site. I told him that my site only provides and that I do not promote any business opportunities that he could register in.

I had to spend 3 years in college studying electronics engineering before I can be an electronics engineer. I spent a further 10 years working in the electronics field as a design engineer. It is only after this period of time that I am considered good enough to be worth a few thousand dollars a month.

There are many websites in the Internet that will tell you that you can potentially make a few thousand dollars a month if you work their program. Every single time, they will also tell you that anybody can do it and no experience is needed. In fact, they will tell you that an unemployed odd job laborer made $1200 after his first month on their program, or something similar.

What I can say is, “Use your common sense.”

If somebody approached you on the street, and offered you $100 to deliver a parcel for him to a downtown address, would you do it? The errand would only take half an hour of your time, and he would pay you there and then.

You will not run the errand right? You will say that you need to walk your dog, walk briskly away and never look back right?

You know that nobody is going to offer you $100 for a half an hour job with no strings attached. There is definitely a catch. He is hoping that greed will take over and you will accept the job.

The Internet might seem somewhat magical since you can’t see it, or touch it, or hold it in you hands. But it is as real as the offline world and exactly same rules apply. There is no free lunch on the Internet and the sooner you realize that, and the sooner you will put in the work needed and reap the benefits.

While few months ago the future of the eReaders was uncertain, today we can say that the eReaders are here to stay.

Amazon Kindle 2 has is currently dominating the market, but many other manufacturers are very close behind. The Sony PRS series is the closest runner-up. This reality in mind, many have sent me emails asking which model they should get.

While good things are being reported about Kindles and the Sony’s, you should be aware of the differences that could influence your buying decision.

The Kindle is the reader of choice for many. The wide selection of titles, along with newspapers and magazines, makes it lucrative enough not to consider the alternatives. And I’m not even mentioning the wireless capabilities.

On the other hand, the Kindle lacks native PDF support. That fact should make many business and academic users think twice before making the plunge.

While most of the academic work available in PDF format, the not so perfect conversion of the Kindle makes the lives of students even tougher than it already is. The documents are displayed awkwardly and sometimes they are completely unreadable. The same goes for the business professionals.

The Sony ereaders, although less user friendly, offer native PDF support and this is the choice for the aforementioned audience. Users have reported a slightly steeper learning curve when first starting to use the Sony’s, and the requirement to have a computer with an on-line connection at hand makes the experience different than with the Kindle.

But, wouldn’t students and business professionals have a computer connected to the internet anyways?

So, to sum things up:

If you consume newspapers on daily basis and enjoy magazines, you will really like the Amazon Kindle that would deliver the paper every morning and make the magazines and the plethora of books Amazon carries available within seconds via the wireless connection.

However, if your main content is going to be in PDF format, go for the Sony. True, you’re bound to your computer, but being able to read PDFs as-is is a huge plus.

Many people are turning to the internet in their search for home business opportunities. Thousands of genuine opportunities are available online and you are sure to find one that suits your interests, skills, knowledge and the time you have to work your business.

There is a lot of hype about internet scams, overnight millionaires and gurus, but if you can navigate around this, you will find many genuine business opportunities. You need to work a business to be successful, so it is unrealistic to expect to find an honest get-rich-quick scheme. Look for an opportunity that has proven itself and comes with a money-back-guarantee.

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t need to have a lot of prior knowledge to have a successful internet based business. Even complete “newbies” (computer talk for someone new to the industry) can set up and run a web business. There is loads of information available to help you, and much of it is free.

You might be interested in one of the programs that establish a complete business for you and all you need to do is plug into the system and you have a ready-made business. There are really good programs like this that give you extensive training, support and assistance to help you succeed. Investigate the program fully, find out the costs in starting and maintaining your business and check out the testimonials. Ask if you can talk to someone who is actually making money from the program. Your potential earnings will differ from program to program, but you are basically paid a commission for bringing in new members to the system.

You can sell your own product or service through your own website. You will need to understand about internet marketing, getting traffic to your site and establishing a list of interested people who could be customers. You can do all of this yourself or you can hire specialists in each field to do the work for you. Every aspect of setting up your internet business can be outsourced if you need it to be.

Maybe you aren’t interested in having your own product or website. That’s OK too - there are plenty of other ways for you to start a home business. You may have some of the skills that web owners need, and could do the work for them on a contract basis. Maybe you have writing skills and can write articles or add content; perhaps you can do data entry, transcribe messages, answer emails, post advertising, do research or any number of other tasks that are vital to the success of a website or business online. Go to one of the freelance sites and check out the projects on offer.

Marketing on the internet is an important aspect of business. Having a great product is no use if no one knows about it. Millions of visitors are online every day; the trick is to attract those interested in your niche, or area, to your site. Some businesses do their own promotion and advertising, but others have an affiliate program that rewards you for sending potential customers to their site. You can easily learn to do this; many affiliates earn good incomes.

When considering home business opportunities look at the start-up and on-going costs and make sure you can afford them; the training and support they offer; the realistic income potential; rules and regulations; how long they have been in business and the affordability of the products.
